Dr. Ghia McAfee Ph.D., M.Sc., B.Pharm was born and bred in South Africa, where she completed her pharmacy degree (B.Pharm Cum Laude) at the University of Potchefstroom in 1999. In 2001 she completed her Master's degree (M.Sc Cum Laude) under Dr. Bergh at the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry in collaboration with the Department of Biochemistry. 

Dr. McAfee enrolled for her doctoral degree in 2002 at the University of Potchefstroom. Since then, the University underwent a merger and is now known as North-West University. She spent the first year of her Ph.D. candidacy at the University and lectured Pharmaceutical Chemistry to third year pharmacy students. In early 2003 Dr. McAfee came to Texas Tech University in Amarillo to work with Dr. Neels van der Schyf, a renowned researcher in Pharmacology and Drug Development. She received her Ph. D. degree in 2005 under Dr. van der Schyf. 

Dr. McAfee co-authored "A Medication Guide for Breastfeeding Moms" with Dr. Tom Hale.
